Featherstone Rovers 34 Leigh Centurions 26: Rovers see off their closest foes Leigh

FEATHERSTONE Rovers stayed firmly on course to finish top of the Co-operative Championship with their 15th win in 16 league matches.

Sam Smeaton bagged two tries and Kyle Briggs scored a try and kicked five goals as Rovers increased their lead to 10 points by completing a league double over closest rivals Leigh.

Featherstone were 12-0 up after just 10 minutes. Slick passing by Liam Finn, Ian Hardman, Briggs and Smeaton sent in Zak Hardaker before Briggs capitalised on careless Leigh handling to scoop up a loose ball and race 65 metres to score.

Leigh's Stuart Donlan had a 'try' ruled out by the video referee before Rovers shot further further ahead when Smeaton's superb break set up a try for Liam Finn.

The Centurions bounced back with quick tries from Lee Mitchell and Martyn Ridyard.

Leigh cut the deficit to two points when Jacob Emmitt scored from Robbie Paul's kick and Ridyard added the goal.

Rovers stretched their lead to 24-16 shortly before half-time when Andy Kain put in Dane Manning and Briggs goaled.

They went further ahead seven minutes into the second half when Smeaton finished a delightful 75-metre move involving Ross Divorty, Hardman and Finn.

Smeaton struck again eight minutes later when Finn sent him in for his second.

Leigh's Matty Blythe charged down a kick to grab a 61st-minute try and although they had Steve Maden sin-binned for dissent, they salvaged a bonus point with Tommy Goulden's 73rd-minute try and Ridyard's third goal.
