Ferres happy to celebrate career milestone with another ugly win

They will seek a third successive victory when they head to one of the second-row’s former clubs Wakefield Trinity Wildcats tomorrow in a game that marks his 250th career appearance.

However, previous victories over Widnes Vikings and Castleford Tigers have been scrappy to say the least as the 2013 League Leaders endure a stuttering start to the campaign.

Indeed, their last outing – the 22-0 win against Castleford – was widely described as one of the worst matches in Super League’s entire history.

Nevertheless, with their defence impeccable, Ferres told The Yorkshire Post: “It was two points for us and I think Cas’ threw quite a lot at us, to be honest.

“They are a good side and our defence held really good.

“We got the win and nilled a side which was very pleasing for us.

“It was two teams who like to throw the ball about so there was bound to be errors.

“Both could be accused of overplaying and being too expansive when it was still 0-0 heading towards the break.

“But we tried to knock a few sets off and then build a performance. Hopefully we’ve done that but are still obviously a way off.

“It was crucial we built on the Widnes win, though. We’ve had a real slow start and we’re renowned for being quick starters so we’ve flipped it around a bit.

“But two games on the trot we’ve been good at home and now we’ve been building up this week ready for Wakefield.”

Ferres played more than 40 games for Trinity during 2007 and 2008 after joining from Bradford Bulls as part of the deal that saw Kiwi star David Solomona move the other way.

The current side is struggling for consistency having lost their last three games after winning the first two.

“Wakey are a bit like us; great in patches and not so good in other matches,” offered Ferres.

“They got pumped at Widnes but were a lot better versus St Helens last week. They probably are a bit scratchy and still finding their feet as they’ve had a few changes with their coaching staff.

“But I’m looking forward to it. We’ve had a good week’s prep’ and a nine-day turnaround since that Cas game.”

In that match, it was scrum-half Jamie Ellis who broke the deadlock with his third try in three games since joining from Castleford and his partnership with ex-Trinity star Danny Brough shows promise.

Ferres, who joined himself from hometown Tigers in 2012, said: “He’s a good player.

“He’s been very under-rated and didn’t get much game time last year (at Cas), but obviously has been identified by ourselves as a half-back alongside Broughy who could cause some havoc.

“He’s been great for us at the start of this season along with Craig Huby and Jack Hughes who have come in as well.”

Huddersfield will look to diminutive hooker Luke Robinson tomorrow for further dynamism after he returned against Castleford following an injury lay-off.

Robinson was sidelined briefly after being floored yet again in an awkward tackle and Ferres, 28, joked: “He’s too small isn’t he, bless him! Sometimes Robbo seems at the right height to hit people’s elbows and gets cracked a few times but fair play to him.

“He gets knocked out, dusts himself off and comes straight back on. He makes a big impact and with him and Kyle Wood now there is real strength in depth in that hooking role.”

Of course, one hooker has moved on with Shaun Lunt, the former England international, making a shock loan switch to Hull KR for the rest of the season.

A 2013 Super League Dream Team member the season Giants finished top, he played in this year’s opening four games but then left, scoring twice on his Rovers debut last Sunday.

Asked if he was surprised by the deal, Ferres said: “It’s tough as players do come and go; it’s the nature of the beast.

“Obviously Lunty wasn’t happy with something and he’s gone out on loan so I wish him the best.

“He’s a good player and hopefully he’ll get back to top form but we’re looking forward and we’ll make the best of it.

“We’re happy with the situation with Robbo, Woody and young Kruise Leeming, too.”
