Five-try Duffy leads points blitz for Hawks

Hunslet Hawks sealed second place in Championship One and a home tie in the play-offs
after a hard-fought win over South Wales Scorpions.

A depleted Scorpions side competed for an hour before the Hawks let rip to give the score a somewhat unbalanced look.

Gavin Duffy ended up with a personal haul of five tries for the Hawks and after he prevented an opening South Wales score, he notched Hunslet’s first.

The second try came from a Scorpions knock-on. Following the scrum, some good passing resulted in an easy try for Danny Maun in the corner. Both kicks were missed.

Scorpions hit back through talented Welsh half-back Paul Emanuelli which he converted himself before Luke Stenchion went over from close range and Thomas Coyle converted to make it a 14-6 lead at the break for the visitors.

They increased their advantage seven minutes after the break after Duffy nabbed his second when he leapt on a Tom Coyle grubber. Coyle missed the kick.

Jim Watson went in between the sticks 10 minutes later and Coyle easily converted before Michael Haley followed him over from the next set after the kick-off.

Ten minutes to go and a good passing move found Lee Brickwood on the wing. Coyle’s conversion went off the post, onto the crossbar and over.

Three tries in the last five minutes from Duffy completed proceedings. Tom Coyle converted the final two to bring up the 50-point mark.
