Food enterprise gets the taste for expansion

Raisthorpe Manor Fine Foods at Wharram, near Malton, is set to double production of its range of home-made spirits and provide three new jobs through the creation of a purpose-built factory in a redundant farm building.

Business owner Julia Medforth has been granted 50,000 towards the work under the Rural Development Programme for England, through Yorkshire Forward. The grant represents 40 per cent of the cost.

Mrs Medforth started the business two years ago, after a family recipe for raspberry gin went down well with guests taking part in shooting days at Raisthorpe Manor, a farm and shoot run by her husband, David, near the Wolds village of Thixendale.

Working in their house, with some part-time help, she has built up a business selling 13 products, including liqueur-flavoured jams and chocolates, through shops and mail order.

Her raspberry gin was a winner in last year's Yorkshire Post Taste Awards and her blackcurrant whisky and orange liqueur jam were commended in this year's Great Taste Awards, run by the Guild of Fine Foods.

Mrs Medforth said: "The development of our new mixing facility will deliver the resources to not only meet existing demand but also actively grow the business."
