Former Castleford and Bradford back Jy Hitchcox says Toulouse Olympique a good fit for Super League

HE did arrive at Toulouse Olympique circuitously from Byron Bay in New South Wales via Sydney, Featherstone, Castleford and Bradford but Jy Hitchcox is certain of one thing: the French club would thrive in Betfred Super League.

The Australian winger, 31, joined from Bradford Bulls and had played just four games – scoring five tries – when the Championship campaign was halted this year due to Covid.

However, as one of the six clubs now bidding to replace Toronto Wolfpack, he hopes to resume in 2021 with the French club in Super League.

Asked about their hopes of succeeding if given the nod on Monday, Hitchcox said: “I think everyone is pretty confident from the top of the club all the way through to the players.

“If you’re sticking with the sort of expansion theme that was Toronto, Toulouse fits the bill. But it’s not just that.

“It’s a massive city, obviously dominated by rugby union but the games aren’t too far apart there.

“We play at the same ground and it would easily be one of the best in Super League if we did get in; the facilities are second to none. There’s a lot of things going for Toulouse and everyone is excited.”

One, of course, would be a derby with Catalans Dragons.

Hitchcox - who played in the 2017 Super League Grand Final for Castleford Tigers against Leeds Rhinos – said: “That would be massive – and ties into a Magic Weekend as well.

“But there is a lot of rugby league over here which people don’t tend to realise.

“Our mindset is if we get promoted next week that’s great.

“If not we’re still aiming to get promoted at the end of next year.

“Our job is Super League either way.”
