Former Tiger Miller hopes to be in hunt for Hull spot against Cas

KEY signing Jacob Miller says he is ready to step straight into Hull FC’s side after finally joining the club at the second attempt.

The Australian scrum-half trained with his new team-mates for the first time yesterday after arriving from NRL club Wests Tigers on a two-and-a-half year deal and hopes to make his debut at Castleford Tigers on Friday.

Hull fans hope he is the answer to their long-running No 7 conundrum and Miller – frustratingly awaiting a visa in Sydney for the last month since the deal was first announced – said: “I was close to coming last season. I talked to the club, but the Tigers put a block on it and there wasn’t much I could do.

“I’m here now though and couldn’t be happier; I was very bored and anxious to get over.

“The visa came in the mail on Thursday and I left Friday.

“My auntie works at the post office and she called me at eight in the morning.

“I saw the phone going off and thought, ‘why’s she calling me at this time?’ Then it clicked it must be about my visa. I was smiling before I even answered.”

A former Australian Schoolboys international, Miller is still only 20 but Hull coach Peter Gentle and captain Gareth Ellis are both big admirers of his skills having worked with him at Wests.

The youngster played the first four NRL games of the season for them before being dropped to reserve grade and is now looking instead to carve out a career in Super League.

It is never easy joining mid-season, especially in such a pivotal position, but Miller – who replaces fellow Australian Brett Seymour at KC Stadium – said: “Any games not shown on television in Australia, Pete was sending me DVDs. He sent me a play book too and I’ve been getting a general idea of the calls.

“I just need to get my match fitness back as I haven’t played for about a month.”

He added: “I feel ready to play Friday night, but it’s Pete’s decision and whatever he decides I’ll roll with it.”
