Gannon urges fans to support Halifax

championship: Halifax favourite Jim Gannon is urging the club’s faithful to turn out in force for their Co-operative Championship play-off against Sheffield Eagles at The Shay tomorrow (1.30pm).

Halifax take on the Eagles in front of the Premier Sports cameras knowing defeat would bring down the curtain on their season, but with a place in the Grand Final at Warrington on September 30 only two wins away, the big prop believes the fans could prove to be the difference in their play-off campaign.

“We’re two wins away from the Grand Final so it’s all hands on deck,” said Gannon. “I’m looking forward to the game, it’s going to be tough because Sheffield are in good form and on form we’re probably the underdogs, but we know there are no prizes for second place.

“They’re a tough side and there’s no real chink in their armour, but we have home ground advantage and at this stage of the season that can mean a lot.

“We enjoy playing at The Shay and the fans are vital in these sort of games because when the chips are down, they can make the difference in getting you out of tough situations.

“We had a big crowd against Batley and against Keighley as well so hopefully the fans will turn out in force again and help us get the result that takes us a step closer to that final.”

Ross Divorty could make his long-awaited comeback from an ankle ligament injury.

Divorty has not played since June against Dewsbury Rams.

Divorty’s return would provide a major boost for Fax, who must now see out the season without Tony Tonks, who broke his arm against Keighley. Anthony Bowman, Dane Manning, Mick Nanyn and Iain Morrison are also missing, while Ben Heaton (shoulder) is doubtful.

Eagles coach Mark Aston will check on James Davey’s fitness after the on-loan hooker was knocked out during last week’s win over Batley Bulldogs.

Misi Tualapapa (shoulder) and Joe Hirst (knee) are also carrying knocks as Sheffield aim for a second successive Grand Final appearance.
