Giant Brown ready to press for international honours

HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS in-form stand-off Kevin Brown has been backed to win England honours by two leading Super League coaches.

Both his chief at the Galpharm Stadium, Nathan Brown, and Hull KR coach Justin Morgan believe the skilful 25-year-old is ready to challenge Wigan's Sam Tomkins and St Helens's Kyle Eastmond for an international half-back spot.

Brown was dominant in Sunday's 40-12 Carnegie Challenge Cup fourth-round victory over Hull KR with a performance which left Morgan purring: "He's a fantastic player, who has really developed into a fantastic half-back.

"What I love about Kevin Brown is the way he carries the ball to the line. He challenges your middle people all the time.

"He's certainly developed a short and long passing game. His long passing game is the one that catches teams out but his short passing game is also really very good.

"He looks like he's developed into a great thinking footballer. He knows when to call the ball. Huddersfield have got a bucket-load of good players but I've got a huge admiration for Kevin Brown."

The 25-year-old was signed from Wigan in 2006 as a centre but has been a revelation since being transformed into a stand-off with his silky displays leaving his Huddersfield coach believing he could soon win his first cap and feature in the Four Nations squad this autumn.

"I'm not the England coach but I'd like to think Kev has got some attributes," said Nathan Brown. "Kyle Eastmond and Sam Tomkins are fine young players, too, but I'd like to think that Kev could be in the mix there somewhere and make that tour if his form continues.

"As he did last year, Kev has a habit of turning his better performances on the big days.

"What he is good at is making people outside him look good. He's only really been 18 months in the position of five-eighth and he's made good progress."

Huddersfield's fifth round tie with holders Warrington Wolves will be televised live on Saturday May 8, at 2.30pm and the Crusaders v Catalans Dragons game will be screened the following day at 3.30pm.

Wakefield Trinity have appointed former marketing director James Elston as their new chief executive.

Elston has left his role as Hull KR operations manager to rejoin the club as part of a senior management reshuffle designed to help them manage their application for a new Super League licence from 2012 and a possible move to a new stadium.

Diane Maskill, executive director, steps up to managing director and Francis Stephenson is promoted from general manager to director of operations.

Wakefield chairman Ted Richardson said: "It is crucial for the future of the Wildcats we have a vibrant management team supported by a staff that are committed to taking the club forward."

Hull centre Kirk Yeaman did not break his leg, as was first feared, in Saturday's cup defeat against Leeds with scans revealing only severe bruising.
