Giants need to bounce back quickly – Ferres

VICE-CAPTAIN Brett Ferres says it is “imperative” Huddersfield Giants respond immediately
after their shock loss at Salford City Reds.

The Super League leaders were ousted from top spot after falling 21-20 against the competition’s bottom club on Good Friday.

Huddersfield won their opening six games of the year but have since lost at Warrington Wolves and now Salford meaning they are in danger of a third successive defeat when Widnes Vikings arrive at the John Smith’s Stadium today.

While many complain of the hectic Easter schedule, second-row Ferres told the Yorkshire Post: “For us, it’s perfect playing again on Monday.

“It means we’ve got a chance to put what happened at Salford right rather than dwelling on it for the whole week.

“It’s imperative we do just that as it was embarrassing really.

“We shouldn’t be dishing that stuff up, to be fair. We obviously took them lightly and got burned for it. It’s on our heads as players and the only good thing is that we get the chance to turn it around straightaway.”

However, Widnes will be a far-from-easy appointment given they produced a shock result of their own on Good Friday,

Dennis Betts’s side – with just two previous wins – stunned Challenge Cup holders Warrington 38-22 to further shake up the division.

England second-row Gareth Hock ran riot and his battle with Ferres should prove fascinating this afternoon.

“They’ll have come away with a lot of confidence having beaten Warrington like that,” added Ferres. “It shows what Widnes are capable of and we definitely need a reaction. We have to put a lot of things right.

“This is a really good game to do that and we are back at home too. We want to make that a bit of a fortress.”

Huddersfield, who welcome back England Knights back-row Michael Lawrence after injury for his first game of the year, are unbeaten there so far.

Ferres, 26, continued: “It’s all about two points at the end of the day and maintaining ourselves to be at the top end of the league come the play-offs.

“Friday was one of those games we should have put to bed and probably racked up a big score too. That’s no disrespect to Salford, but it wasn’t good enough for where we are in the league.

“We pride ourselves on what we’re doing here, but that wasn’t up to scratch by a long way.”

Teenage back-row Pete Aspinall made his debut on Friday and Ferres was impressed.

“It was a nervous time for Pete,” he added. “But he’s got that first game out of the way now and can push on. That aside, though, there weren’t any other positives.”
