Give Agar time at Hull FC, says Brown after Giants win

AS pressure mounted on Hull FC coach Richard Agar last night, he received timely support from his opposite number at Huddersfield Giants.

Nathan Brown saw his side inflict a 20-10 defeat on the East Yorkshire club who have yet to pick up a point in the new Super League season and whose restless fans are already calling for action.

They have started an internet campaign to oust Agar from his post at KC Stadium but Brown insists – given the manner in which they fought back from 10-0 down to level – there should be plenty of positives.

Hull have some very talented players,” he said.

“They made us work really hard to earn our victory.

“If Hull work as hard as that every week, then they are going to have a good year.

“Hopefully, Hull’s fans will be a bit easier on Richard. The players are certainly playing for him.

“They could easily have fallen away when we were 10-0 up.

“After two or three weeks, people have got a bit hasty,” he said.

Some of Brown’s own players got a little hasty as they sloppily wasted opportunities on the back of a plethora of possession given Danny Brough’s stellar kicking game.

“We have a lot to work on in attack,” he admitted, after they responded to last week’s loss at Castleford.

“But if the players can play with the same discipline and control, they can keep grinding the results out until we are playing with more fluency.”

Agar saw his side, who have had a tough start with losses to Hull Kingston Rovers and Leeds Rhinos, respond brightly after coming under an early barrage of pressure.

He said: “We had a pretty intense storm to weather early on; Huddersfield started exceptionally well.

“The problem was that we didn’t have the ball, and the penalty count was against us,” he said.

“I was a little disappointed by some of the penalties we conceded as it put us under the pump.

“We spent most of it trying to get out of own half and some of that was down to the way Huddersfield kicked although our back three, while magnificent last week, came up with a couple of fumbles when there was no real pressure at all.

“The players ended the first half in good shape to have earned the right to get back into the contest after a pretty torrid time,” he added.

“Probably the last 20 minutes though saw a couple of moments of ill-discipline cost us dearly.”

Agar added: “The changing room is full of disappointed players.

“They’re not happy at coming away with what they’re coming away with.

“That’s a good sign.

“There’s plenty of spirit in the side.

“They showed lots of tenacity to get back in the game and as long as keep putting that effort in we won’t be that far away.”
