Green snatches a late winner on the hooter to earn Doncaster win

DONCASTER centre Chris Green was the hero against Workington Town yesterday – as his late try clinched them three vital Championship One points.

Green went over the try line as the final hooter sounded at Derwent Park, with Town just ahead 32-30.

But that all changed with Green’s try and the elation was plain to see across the full squad, who celebrated with him.

Twenty minutes before that, it looked as though Town would walk away with the points as they were coasting clear at 32-16 ahead.

But they slipped off the pace and Doncaster capitalised on every mistake with hooker Jack Ely to the fore, along with half-backs Aaron Dobeck and Craig Fawcett.

Workington scored first through Scott Kaighan, with Darren Hot converting but then Doncaster edged ahead when first Gareth Potts and then Stuart Sanderson found their way over the try line, Dobeck converting both.

Potts bagged his second which went unconverted before Town came back just before the break with two tries from Jack Pedley and Jarrad Stack, both converted by Holt to give them an 18-16 lead at half time.

Stack got his second and then Kaighan went over, Holt converting both and adding a penalty.

But then they began to make errors, which Doncaster made the most of with Ely and then Sanderson crossing to put them within eight points.

Chris Green touched down with seven minutes remaining and Dobeck added the extras for 32-30 to Town and all to play for.

Then, a fumble from Town’s Darren Holt near his own line saw Doncaster form the scrum and fling the ball out wide to the waiting Green who dived over the line in the last second of the game to clinch a deserved win.
