Greenwood’s injury adds to Halifax woes

Halifax full-back Miles Greenwood suffered a suspected broken leg as Featherstone inflicted a second Shay defeat on their Yorkshire rivals.

The hosts had already lost hooker Ben Kaye in the warm-up before Greenwood departed with a suspected double fracture of his lower leg.

Halifax were the dominant side for long spells, but struggled to turn that superiority into points. After cutting the gap to 18-12 with six minutes to go Halifax had the possession and territory to win the game, but squandered their chances, and Rovers finally sealed victory with a try from Joe Arundel, one of four Wakefield players drafted in on dual registration.

Rovers took the lead when Greenwood’s fumble allowed Paul Sykes to cross. After Greenwood left on a stretcher, it got worse for the hosts as Tom Johnstone claimed Gareth Moore’s kick for a try.

Halifax reduced the arrears to 10-6 when Steve Tyrer claimed Scott Murrell’s cross kick, the centre adding the conversion.

The hosts spurned several chances, but Murrell’s sin-binning opened the door for Rovers.

Andy Ellis poached a try before a Sykes penalty put the visitors 18-6 up. The deficit was reduced when Johnston’s break set up Mitch Cahalane’s try.

Tyrer converted, and Fax had the chances to claim a draw, but Arundel’s late try summed up an afternoon when everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.
