Grix will add real quality to Halifax squad, says Marshall

Grix, who will turn 30 next week, rejoins his hometown club after initially leaving Halifax to sign with Warrington in 2006.

The Ireland international – who mainly operates in the back-row – has agreed a one-year deal at the Championship outfit with an option for an extra year.

He has won the Challenge Cup three times with Warrington and reached two Grand Finals but, of course, has not played since suffering a horrendous leg fracture against St Helens 12 months ago.

Grix debuted with Halifax in 2003 when they were last in Super League and hopes to eventually help guide them back to the top flight.

Head coach Richard Marshall worked with him as an assistant at Warrington before returning to The Shay himself last autumn.

“Having someone like Simon in our organisation is a real positive,” he said.

“He’s a true leader on the field and an excellent professional off it. He had several other excellent options to consider, but he has chosen to continue his career at Halifax RLFC of which we are delighted.

“I am really looking forward to working with Simon and I am sure he will add real quality to our squad for 2016.”

Captain Kevin Sinfield is confident his Leeds Rhinos career has not been brought to a premature end.

Sinfield will join Rhinos’ rugby union sister club Yorkshire Carnegie at the end of the current Super League season.

Rhinos have a maximum of three competitive games left and there were fears Sinfield might not play for them again after he suffered a dead leg in Thursday’s home defeat by Castleford Tigers.

But the former England captain says he is “99 per cent” sure he will be fit for next week’s play-off semi-final – and has not ruled himself out of Friday’s final Super 8s fixture at Huddersfield Giants.

Huddersfield prop Craig Kopczak, who led Wales in the 2013 World Cup, says he will be available for their European Championship fixtures this autum having sat out the tournament last year to “freshen up.”

Batley Bulldogs scrum-half Scott Leatherbarrow, 25, has joined London Broncos on a two-year full-time deal.
