Halifax 52 Whitehaven 6: Steve Tyrer equals 1994 record set by John Schuster

Centre Steve Tyrer equalled John Schuster's 22-year-old points in a game record as Halifax opened their Championship season with a crushing 52-6 home win over Whitehaven at the Shay.

Tyrer ran in four tries – including a first half hat trick – and kicked eight goals for a personal tally of 32, matching the mark set by the former All Black and Newcastle Knights threequarter in a romp at Doncaster in 1994.

With new signing Gareth Moore calling the shots alongside Scott Murrell and Dane Manning outstanding, the home side were in control from the start.

Halifax took the lead on 12 minutes, Tyrer cutting inside to score near the posts. The centre converted and was over again, after super build-up play from Manning and winger Will Sharp.

Moore added a third try, Tyrer converting for an 18-0 lead.

And Halifax struck again on the stroke of half time, Tyrer exchanging passes with Ryan Maneely before completing his hat-trick and booting his team 24-0 ahead.

The second half was almost entirely one way traffic, with Sam Smeaton touching down before Tyrer bagged his fourth.

Ben Kaye bustled over to take the score out to 40-0, before Sharp soared to claim a well judged chip from Moore.

Smeaton put James Saltonstall over in the corner, Tyrer stepped up and landed the conversion.

Whitehaven finally got on the scoreboard in the final minute through Elliott Miller, who converted his own try.
