Harlequins 18 Hull FC 42: Seven-try Hull cruise to capital victory over struggling Quins

Mark O'Meley ran in two tries as Hull held off a second-half Harlequins revival to move into fourth place in the Engage Super League table at the Twickenham Stoop.

The visitors had opened up a 30-0 half-time lead, only for Quins to respond with three tries of their own before late scores from Jordan Tansey and O'Meley sealed the points.

Hull assistant coach James Webster afterwards demanded that his side keep their foot on the gas after a 42-18 win in the hoisted them up the table.

The visitors ran in seven tries as they held off a Quins rally, leapfrogging Leeds in the table in the process.

And Webster is expecting more of the same over the remainder of the campaign.

He said: "Of course it is very important that we finish as high as we can in the Super League table.

"We are really excited about the performance today and that is something we have to match over the final four rounds.

"We came here with a real level of determination after the defeat to Wigan last week and we really put that behind us.

"We have a week off now next week and the key for us is looking forward and making sure we take our place in the play-off semi-finals."

Webster was also ecstatic after seeing his side end their Stoop hoodoo with a first win at the famous ground.

He continued: "We all knew we had a terrible record down here and that was something we all talked about in training last week.

"There were some really motivated players out there today and you could argue that our first-half performance was the best we have played all season. It was absolutely outstanding and we are all delighted."

Hull's lightning start to the contest saw them run in five first-half tries as they opened up their 30-0 interval lead.

O'Meley was first on the scoresheet, bouncing off a couple of tacklers to touch down under the sticks.

And his effort was quickly followed by tries from Kirk Yeaman and Danny Houghton as Hull wasted little time in getting into the groove.

There were further first-half scores from Jordan Turner and Sam Moa as the Airlie Birds all-but ended the game as a contest inside 40 minutes.

After the break Hull struggled to match the heights of their opening half display, leading to a rather sedate contest.

Harlequins thought they had their opening score on 52 minutes, only for David Howell to spill the ball over the line.

But they did stage something of a revival thanks to tries from Luke Dorn, Will Sharp and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook.

But just when an unlikely turnaround appeared possible, Hull ran in late scores from Tansey and O'Meley to seal the valuable points.

Dejected Quins coach Brian McDermott said his side needed to sort out their problems as soon as possible.

"At the moment it seems to be an issue with our mentality," he said. "We really lacked direction and the first-half performance was unacceptable. I am disappointed and I am frustrated and so are the players. We have a proud group of players here and some are close to tears about how poorly they played. We know we cannot make the play-offs but in many ways that is irrelevant. We have four games left and we have to give everything we have to finish as strongly as we can."
