Harlequins 40 Castleford Tigers 24: Tigers sit back and allow Quins to seize momentum

CHAD RANDALL bagged a brace of tries as Harlequins earned a come-from-behind 40-24 win over Castleford Tigers.

Quins trailed with 10 minutes to go, but the Londoners ran in four late tries to earn their third straight Engage Super League win.

The home side took a fortuitous early lead when Chris Melling juggled a pass from Danny Orr, only to reclaim the looping ball and stroll over the line. On eight minutes, Luke Gale's chip then allowed Kevin Penny to touch down.

But, after soaking up relentless pressure, the visitors rallied with Brent Sherwin's grubber cannoning off Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook into the grateful arms of Joe Westerman, who walked over under the sticks.

Quins burst back into life on the half-hour mark, Luke Williamson, Danny Orr and David Howell combining to send Randall tearing over the line.

Back came Castleford, a combination of passes releasing centre Brett Ferres who managed to ground the ball despite close attention.

The Tigers then stunned the crowd by taking a half-time lead, Liam Huggins cutting through a huge gap to roll under the posts.

There was an unsavoury incident to open up the second half, Ryan McGoldrick taking out Melling as he looked to score. McGoldrick was penalised, but Quins failed to capitalise.

Howell had a try disallowed for blocking as the hosts pressed, but they were caught napping by a Westerman break on 55 minutes, Steve Snitch on hand to push the Tigers into a decent lead. But they opted for a safety-first approach enabling the hosts to find their second wind.

Firstly Randall raced clear for his second, and minutes later Luke Williamson bullied over after Penny made a lightning break from inside his own half.

The comeback was complete when Danny Orr burrowed over with five minutes to go, Howell running in a further effort.

For Tigers coach Terry Matterson, the defeat was a tough one to swallow.

He said: "We pressed self-destruct at the end. We went from being a good team to a bad one in the space of a few minutes, doing some uncharacteristic things and that is a problem.

"We went away from what we had been doing for the whole half and we got punished."
