Holderness Vikings 14 Reckitts 38: Reckitts plunder six tries to kill off Vikings' hopes of Cup glory

GMB Union Hull & District

RECKITTS ran away with a comfortable victory to clinch the Tom Beautiman Cup against Holderness Vikings.

The match was the only game of amateur rugby league to be played in the country, due to the hard work of Paul and Karl Beardshaw and the rest of the staff at Haworth Park.

The Vikings were first on the score-sheet within five minutes, from the boot of John McCloud, after referee Tony Randerson gave Reckitts's Australian prop, Mike Skelly, 10 minutes in the sin bin.

In attack, it was a pleasure to watch Joe and Sam Williams, Skelly, Jake Learsmouth, Steve Clavering and Mike Butcher, who all excelled, backed up by the rest of the 17-man squad.

Ashley Simpson got Reckitts on the scoresheet when he charged onto a lovely floated pass off Joe Williams, racing 15 metres to go over by the right upright as early as 12 minutes.

On the 20-minute mark, Learsmouth showed his class when he jinked and weaved 50 metres to score by the posts.

Just before the break, Joe Williams latched onto a pass off Skelly to sidestep under the post for a try and goal to add to his previous two conversions, giving Reckitts an 18-2 lead at the break.

Five minutes after the restart, Ali McCloud broke free down the left for the Vikings on a 40-metre run, a neat grubber kick saw Ben Billany beat the Reckitts defence to score, with John McCloud landing the touchline conversion.

But any hopes of a comeback were decimated after Reckitts ran in four unanswered tries.

Karl Spooner was first to go over, finishing off a move which went the whole length of the pitch.

Learsmouth ran in twice within the space of three minutes – the first coming in the 56th minute – to complete a deserved hat-trick, both of which were goaled by Joe Williams.

In the 73rd minute, Cameron Greaves sent Simpson in for his second try, although there was no goal.

The Vikings got a consolation effort just before the final whistle, when McCloud finished off a fine move with a try and goal to make it 38-14.
