Home-grown Marsh gets thumbs-up as Campese ruled out

Hull KR's injury-jinxed captain Terry Campese is facing up to another lengthy lay-off, says head coach James Webster.

The 31-year-old Australian stand-off was out for eight months with a knee reconstruction and damaged a hamstring on his comeback at Huddersfield last month.

Campese returned after a month’s absence in last Friday’s game at Leeds but lasted only 13 minutes before aggravating his hamstring injury and could be out for up to two months.

“We are looking at six to eight weeks for Terry,” said Webster. “It’s a little bit worse than before.

“Obviously we need to give him some time to get over that. We don’t want to risk him in any way.

“We’ve got a couple of Challenge Cup games in between so we’re probably looking at four or five league games.

“He’s disappointed, of course. No player likes to sit on the sidelines especially when he’s missed a large chunk of the season already.

“Saying that, you’ve got to look at the positives. We’ve got two people who are able to do the job and we’ll get a fresh, fit player back at the end of the year when we’ll need to win some games.”

In the absence of both Campese and regular half-back partner Albert Kelly, who is a fortnight away from making his return from a hamstring injury, Rovers have turned to 21-year-old Matty Marsh, a local product, and experienced Australian Maurice Blair.

Webster is happy to put his confidence in the pair for the visit of Catalans Dragons on Thursday.

“You couldn’t find a better player for us this year than Maurice, he’s been outstanding,” said Webster. “I think we’ve found a good role for him. All our best things this year have come through Maurice.

“I haven’t got a problem at all playing him there. And Matty Marsh is getting better every game. This country writes off half-backs way too early.”

Webster is also able to call on French international John Boudebza and fellow hooker George Lawler as well as centre Thomas Minns, who all missed the Robins’ 30-10 win over the Rhinos.

Australian forward Mitch Achurch will leave Leeds Rhinos at the end of the season.

Achurch’s contract expires this autumn and he confirmed the club have told him he will not be kept on.

He is considering whether to stay in Leeds to run his new gym business or return Down Under – and is aiming to bow out of Rhinos with some good form under his belt.

The 27-year-old joined Rhinos from Penrith Panthers on a four-year deal ahead of the 2013 season and was a member of last year’s Challenge Cup-winning team.

Rhinos, who visit Salford Red Devils on Saturday, are second from bottom in Super League.

Wigan will be without forward Liam Farrell for Sunday’s Super League game at Wakefield after he accepted a one-match ban.

The England second-row was charged with a grade B offence of striking Warrington half-back Stefan Ratchford with his knees during his side’s 28-16 home defeat by the Wolves.

Farrell opted to submit an early-guilty plea and received the lowest possible suspension for the offence.
