Huby intent on focusing on new task with Huddersfield

The ball-handling prop, 28, is currently immersed in pre-season training with his new club following the recent switch from his hometown side.

Uncapped Huby played his way into the England training squad earlier this year following some career-best form with high-flying Castleford.

Perhaps only the after-effects of a dislocated elbow, suffered in the Challenge Cup semi-final, prevented him from touring to the Four Nations. But he has not ruled out making that jump in Fartown colours after signing a four-year deal.

“From where I came from last year I was just happy to have got in that training squad,” he said.

“That was a bonus. I never really expected to get in on the tour, but hopefully I can push on now.

“Steve (McNamara) has told me to just keep doing what I’m doing.

“The injury might have played a part in me not being selected, but I’ve just got to concentrate on what I do for Giants now.

“I’m not really interested in saying ‘I want to play for England’ as if I play well enough week-in, week-out for Huddersfield that should look after itself.

“You always have to keep improving, keep working hard and playing with different players will help me do that now.

“I had Grant Millington and Andy Lynch in the middle with me last season but now there’s big Eorl (Crabtree) and Craig Kopczak in there at Huddersfield. I can always pick up things from them and hopefully get better again.”

Huby, who played in the Challenge Cup final defeat to Leeds Rhinos less than a fortnight after injuring his elbow, says he expects to be fully fit for the opener at home to Hull FC on February 8.

“It’s not too bad,” he said. “Still a little sore, but that’s just because of the nature of the injury and I expected it to be like that given how quickly I came back.

“It’ll be strange playing for Giants after so many years at Cas.

“Training for the first time was a bit weird going from the same five-minute travel into the ground to a new place half hour up the motorway. Having said that, I knew a lot of the lads already. I’d played with Brett (Ferres), Shaun Lunt, Danny Brough and Luke Robinson at Cas while Kyle Wood’s a Cas lad, too, who I drive in with. All that helped.

“I’ve got a job to do here now. It’ll be just like another game for me. I’ll be giving exactly the same as I did for Cas, but it will be interesting when I pull that Huddersfield shirt on for the first time. I am excited by that.”
