Huddersfield Giants duo latest on their way out from John Smith's Stadium

Huddersfield Giants have sanctioned a deal to see winger Innes Senior rejoin Wakefield Trinity on a season-long loan for 2021 and also released half-back Tom Holmes so he can pursue options in the Championship.

Head coach Ian Watson has been making plenty of changes to his squad since joining from Salford Red Devils last month and this latest business will help further re-shaping.

Senior, the 20-year-old former England Academy international who is highly-regarded at Giants, finished last season on loan with Trinity and made a decent impact for Chris Chester’s side.

But ex-Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers half-back Holmes has fallen further down the pecking order at John Smith’s Stadium where Watson already has captain Aidan Sezer and Lee Gaskell in the halves as well as NRL recruit Jack Cogger.

Huddersfield have also signed London Broncos’ James Cunningham, who, like Cogger and Holmes, can play in the halves and at hooker.

Giants managing director Richard Thewlis said: “The new era under Ian Watson continues to take shape ahead of our return to train in early January.

“These moves are linked to other recruitment matters with the overall objective being to have a reduced squad in 2021 but one, of course, packed with quality that can challenge for honours.

"In Tom's case the signing of NRL half back/hooker Jack Cogger alongside James Cunningham did make his path into the first-team more difficult and he is a player that has a number of options open to him which he is keen to explore and ultimately he will take one of them. “He leaves with our best wishes for the future and thanks for his time with us.”

Thewlis continued: "In the case of Innes he is a player that, as things stand, we see having a long-term future at our club.

“His issue is one that will face many players of his age in the game in 2021 with no reserve competition and the RFL having removed the dual-registration option.

"Everyone here feels that to improve significantly he needs regular game time and it was seen from his spell at Wakefield towards the end of last year how he benefited from that.

“It’s a tough call for us to make but Wakefield are keen for another year and Ian is comfortable with the numerous options we have on the wings to be able to let Innes have a year out and work with Chris Chester across at Belle Vue.

"The future is difficult to predict in rugby league but we do see Innes as being part of our club going forward but for him this is the best move at this stage of his career and one that he was very keen to take.”
