Huddersfield Giants' Oli Roberts dedicates win over Leeds Rhinos to grieving Davy family

The club was shocked by news of Jennifer Davy’s sudden death on the eve of Thursday’s Super League game.

However, under-strength Giants finally delivered a first win in 10 games by inflicting a surprise 31-12 defeat on their West Yorkshire rivals at Headingley.

Second-row Roberts, who scored Huddersfield’s final try as they surged clear from a 12-12 interval scoreline, told The Yorkshire Post: “It was a huge win for us and one we really needed especially after the news we received about Jennifer passing.

“It was a really big shock for us as players and staff and that victory will be dedicated to Ken and, of course, Jennifer.

“It was important we showed our respect; she was always there, always saw us after games and it is so sad.”

Giants had already been at a low ebb following Sunday’s woeful Challenge Cup exit at home to Championship part-timers Swinton Lions.

Coach Rick Stone was under scrutiny given his side’s dismal form but former Bradford Bulls forward Roberts praised the manner in which the Australian had dealt with recent events.

“It’s been a tough time for him especially with the information we received on Wednesday,” he said.

“There was even more pressure on his shoulders but he’s dealt with it really well has Rick.

“He’s been calm, collected and that’s been good for the lads. Of course he’s got his right-hand man Spuggy (Chris Thorman) there, too, who’s really good and Luke Robinson always in his ear helping. Those three are really good for this club.”

The industrious Roberts showed great strength to power over for his fourth try in a dozen matches so far this season.

“It was a tough game especially with the conditions but the boys dug deep and the scrambling defence was outstanding especially in the middle,” said the 21-year-old, now in his third campaign at John Smith’s Stadium.

“Danny Brough’s kicking was second to none, we chased well and it paid off for us while my try near the end just brought a bit of relief.

“Hopefully this is a turning point for us, beating Leeds at Headingley in front of a big crowd like that.

“It’s proved what we can do and there’s nothing to stop us from doing that week in week out.

“We’ve another tough game against Castleford next Thursday so that’s another challenge we need to step up to.”
