Huddersfield’s captain is happy to let his performances lead the way

GIVEN the furore around his non-selection for England it is hardly surprising when you hear Danny Brough describe his current form as the best of his career.

The Huddersfield Giants half-back takes his confident side to Hull KR tonight seeking to keep up their relentless pressure on Super League leaders Wigan Warriors.

Clearly, the majority of his colleagues are impressing too but Brough’s own performances, even by his high standards over a career that has seen him light up Hull FC, Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity have been eye-catching.

Some players lose some of their powers when taking on the captaincy but the 30-year-old seems to have thrived since being given the responsibility by head coach Paul Anderson ahead of this campaign.

“There’s a triangle of me, Luke (Robinson) and Brett Ferres,” explained Brough.

“We all have words now and again but I try to do my captaincy by just playing and that’s what’s helping me at the moment; trying to be a leader out there and get people working for us.

“It’s the most consistent form I’ve ever felt but that’s because the team’s been consistent as well and it’s helped me. It is the best spell I’ve had and I’m just enjoying it while it’s going.”

After Monday night’s 25-16 victory over St Helens, Huddersfield are now seeking a tenth win in just 11 games when they head to Craven Park.

Brough added: “Hull KR are a tough team. They’re a great home side who can put 50 on a side or have 50 put on them.”

Anderson retains the same 19-man squad though he could freshen things up by recalling David Faiumu or Jamie Cording to the matchday 17.

Bradford Bulls back-row forward Elliott Whitehead has shocked the club by handing in a transfer request.

The 23-year-old Bradford-born player, who is an ever-present this season, has been dropped for Sunday’s game at St Helens after telling coach Francis Cummins that he wants to play for a bigger club. Cummins said: “He is now on leave until the situation is resolved. I can’t have players in my squad who don’t want to be here.”

Whitehead is valued by Bradford in excess of £100,000.
