Hull KR 28 St Helens 24: Fisher swoops to clinch Hull KR's win over Saints

HULL KR coach Justin Morgan praised his side's grit and determination following this win over St Helens yesterday.

Ben Fisher was the hero for the home side with a match-winning try two minutes from time in a hugely entertaining match at Craven Park.

"We did show some more grit and determination at times, but we need to become a bit smarter," Morgan said.

"We rallied round nicely in the last 10 minutes and it was a nice decisive play from Ben Fisher to get the winner.

"I thought we were pretty solid for the first 25 to 30 minutes, apart from their score, and went on and racked up three tries."

Although his whole squad put up a spirited display, Morgan signalled out Rhys Lovegrove for special praise, adding: "He did a great job for us."

And hooker Scott Murrell was also lauded after a typically wholehearted display.

"When you ask him to do something it's usually at 100mph and he usually does it very well," Morgan added.

Saints boss Mick Potter was not the happiest of men after seeing his side fight back from being 16-8 down to take a 24-22 lead, only to lose out in the closing stages.

"They had 40-odd tackles on our line," Potter said. "That may be something to do with how well KR played, but at the end of the day the responsibility comes back on us.

"We needed to get them off our line for 40-odd plays. I don't think many teams can hold out for that length of time."

Rovers welcomed back winger Liam Colbon and pack man Ben Galea, the Australian making his first league start of the season after suffering a knee injury in a pre-season match against Bradford. He replaced Matt Cook in the hosts' line-up.

Saints were without Hull-born Jon Wilkin who is among a long list of casualties while for prop Nick Fozzard it was a return to Craven Park, where he spent last season.

Rovers went into the match after getting back on the winning track with a narrow 24-20 triumph at Castleford while

St Helens edged out Wakefield 22-16.

After the early sparring it was Saints who took an eighth-minute lead when Gary Wheeler touched down Leon Pryce's kick for an unconverted try.

Rovers went close on 14 minutes when Shaun Briscoe was held up over the line but a minute later Jonny Lomax failed to sort out Michael Dobson's kick and Galea celebrated his return by touching down, with Dobson converting.

Then Rovers added two more tries in two minutes from Liam Colbon who was sent in for the first on 21 minutes by Kris Welham, and Welham and Dobson set up his second, Dobson converting the second score.

St Helens fought back and a spilled ball by the home defence let Kyle Eastmond in for an unconverted try on 27 minutes.

Five minutes before the break Welham was penalised for obstruction and from the play which followed Scott Moore touched down with Eastmond converting.

On 39 minutes the home defence relaxed and Francis Meli strolled in to score with Eastmond's conversion taking Saints into a 20-16 half-time lead.

Three minutes into the second half Rovers moved the ball along the left where Colbon squeezed in at the corner for his hat-trick and Dobson produced a superb touchline conversion to see his side back into a 22-20 lead.

Pryce and Tony Puletua were held up over the line on 56 minutes but a minute later Chris Dean put Saints back ahead with an unconverted try.

As the clock ticked down Rovers mounted attack after attack and in the 78th minute the pressure paid off when hooker Fisher touched down between the posts with Dobson converting.
