Hunslet Hawks 0 Featherstone Rovers 68: Hunslet are humbled by Rovers in front of new recruit

HUNSLET announced the signing of former Featherstone winger Waine Pryce before kick-off but the newcomer could only watch helplessly as Hawks suffered a crushing Northern Rail Cup defeat to slick-handling Rovers.

Hunslet fell behind when stand-off Jesse Joe Parker took several would-be tacklers over the line with him. Aaron Dobek added the goal.

Centre Danny Allan then squeezed over and Dobek landed a towering conversion.

Slack tackling enabled full-back Zak Hardaker to go for the Championship side's third try, Dobek adding the goal.

Rovers had Gareth Williamson sin-binned shortly before the interval but Hunslet failed to take advantage and after Dobek converted his own try a minute after the change-round, Tommy Saxton crossed in the corner.

It was simply a matter of how many points Rovers would score and Ross Divorty, Williamson, Lasen Marabe, Jack Lee and Parker added further tries, Hardaker scoried two more for a hat-trick and Dobek took his goals tally to 10 and his points haul to 24.

Hunslet Hawks: Larvin; Challenger, Cook, Knight, Mark; Young, Scott; Slain, Robinson, Helme, Wilson, Kelly, Wabo. Substitutes: Firm, Lowe, Brooke, R Dale.

FORMER Wales and British Lions full-back Gareth Thomas will be unveiled as a Crusaders player today in a huge coup for the Wrexham-based Super League club.

The 35-year-old Cardiff Blues player is the most capped Welshman of all time and is thought to have agreed an 18-month contract to become the biggest convert from rugby union since the 15-man code went professional in 1995.

He is contracted with Cardiff until May but could be unveiled to Crusaders fans at their next home game against Catalans Dragons on March 19.

CASTLEFORD TIGERS second-row Brett Ferres will be out for up to three months after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The former Bradford and Wakefield forward sustained the injury in Saturday's defeat against Hull KR and joins utility player Dean Widders (knee) and winger Richard Owen (broken leg) on the club's long-term casualty list.

"It's a big blow to us," said Tigers coach Terry Matterson. "He's an integral part of our team and it comes on the back of Dean and Richie's injuries.

"It seems like every week we get one but that's rugby. It's a chance for someone to step up.

"It's a real test of character for us. Our squad is certainly getting tested."
