Hunslet Hawks 46 Swinton Lions 12: Maximum haul for Hunslet after Lions suffer at hands of March

HUNSLET comfortably tamed the Lions to register their third victory in nine days.

Paul March's men needed stout defensive work early on, Swinton full-back Richie Hawkyard narrowly failing to open the scoring when he was tackled on his back over the line.

However, Hunslet clicked into gear with three tries in a 20-minute spell. Full-back Stuart Kain joined the line to send top try-scorer Wayne McHugh in at the corner and after winger Waine Pryce had a try disallowed for stepping into touch, substitute Neil Lowe was first to reach a kick-ahead and score. Half-back Danny Grimshaw dummied his way over for the Hawks' third try but Swinton hit back briefly with a try from second rower Paul Smith, converted by Carl Sneyd.

Hunslet quickly regained the momentum with tries from Tommy Haughey and Charlie Wabo, David March converting four of his side's five first-half touchdowns as the Hawks led 28-6 at half-time.

Aided by a succession of penalties against the home side, Swinton began the second half strongly, their big forwards punching holes in the Hawks' defence. Andy Isherwood grabbed the Lions' second try and Smith had a try disallowed for crossing.

Hooker Richard Chapman got the Hawks back on track with an outrageous dummy to score by the posts and with half-backs Graham Holroyd and Ian Watson failing to exert their usual influence at half-back, Swinton never looked like taking the points.

David March, who finished with a match tally of 18 points, converted his own try to take the Hawks to the 40-point mark for the fifth successive game and Lowe collected his second try of the game.
