Hunslet on top after Stags win

JOHN OAKES was rewarded for a typical barnstorming performance with two tries for Hunslet who consolidated their position at the top.

Andy Yates, on dual registration from the Rhinos, also played an important part on his return to the Hawks’ pack, but the game was marred by a mass brawl near the end. The referee contented himself with sending Hunslet’s Danny Ansell and Hemel’s Romaine Navarrete to the sin-bin, but further action could be taken when the game is reviewed.

Oakes gave Hunslet an early lead, Ansell added the goal, before Jamaine Akaidere added an unconverted touchdown.

Hard-working Oakes punished weak defensive work for his second try and Hunslet’s third to leave them 14-0 ahead at the interval.

The advantage was soon extended as Liam Mackay raced to the posts, leaving Ansell an easy conversion, but the Hawks had to show strong defensive qualities before scrum-half Jy-mel Coleman finally broke their resistance with a try improved by Barry John Swindells.

Stuart Kain’s converted try rounded off the win.
