Impressive Jake Webster is rewarded with new Castleford Tigers deal

REWARDING Jake Webster with a new one-year deal was easy for Castleford Tigers' head coach Daryl Powell given he has been such a 'revelation' this campaign.

The former New Zealand centre has signed on until the end of 2017 at least as he continues to show his form and versatility for the West Yorkshire club.

Webster, 32, only agreed a new contract for this season in November but has quickly seen that extended.

He has slotted in effortlessly since captain Michael Shenton was ruled out for six months by an injury suffered in their first game, proving to be one of Super League’s most difficult opponents.

Webster, who joined from Hull KR in 2013, has played in all nine matches so far, scoring five tries and forming a fine partnership with prolific winger Denny Solomona.

Previously, he played more than 100 games for Rovers during a five-year spell there having joined from Gold Coast Titans in 2008 but is arguably in his finest form now since moving to the UK.

Webster can also play second-row effectively and, ahead of Sunday’s game at Widnes, Powell said: “Jake has been a revelation this season.

“He is fitter than previous seasons, and has taken over the left centre position in such a positive way. His work-rate with the ball has been outstanding, which along with a tough defence has meant this contract extension is very well deserved.”

The former Melbourne Storm player, who recently became a British citizen, says relocating from Hull has helped him reach higher standards.

“Moving house to Castleford is probably the best thing I’ve done,” he explained.

“It’s helped my body, to be able to rest up, and it’s brought me closer to the boys and to the club.

“I’m feeling really good. It’s been a bit of a tedious few years for me with injuries, so I’m pretty proud of myself. I am excited to be staying with Cas’ and hopefully we can build on the start we’ve made this year.”
