Jones-Bishop tipped to get England recognition by Burrow

Rob Burrow has tipped Leeds Rhinos’ team-mate Ben Jones-Bishop to break into the England Four Nations squad following his excellent start to the season.

The electric winger/full-back heads into Friday’s game against Harlequins having scored four tries in the opening two games of Engage Super League.

Jones-Bishop secured a hat-trick in the win over Bradford Bulls and then added a sensational 80-metre effort at Hull FC on Friday as Leeds maintained their 100 per cent start. At just 22, he looks like one of the game’s hottest prospects and scrum-half Burrow, who represented Great Britain five times, told the Yorkshire Post: “Bish is one of those people who comes along only every once in a while.

“He’s a special talent and, with Kallum Watkins, I think we’ve got two lads who can form a great partnership down the line whether it be centre, wing or full-back.

“They are great lads and played a big part in our victory at Hull.

“Bish is really bouncing at the minute and is very comfortable in this team here now.

“I think he could be an England international at the end of the year and is just a great talent.”

The Leeds-born player prospered during a season-long loan at Harlequins last year under current Rhinos coach Brian McDermott.

“We’ve been blessed with great wingers and so the opportunity to go out and get some experience there was brilliant for Bish,” added Burrow.

“It doesn’t get much better than being nominated as Super League’s young player of the year as he was.

“Friday night will be a big one for both of them. Obviously, Brian Mac was instrumental for Harlequins – he was a massive part of that club – and Bish was a quality player for them last year so it’ll be interesting.”

Meanwhile, Burrow, 28, seems to be re-invigorated under the coaching of McDermott.

He was instrumental in helping Leeds win 32-18 at KC Stadium, finishing off one classic move and being involved in three of their other tries.

Now in his 11th season at Headingley, Burrow is thriving as he helps to ease the loss of half-back partner Danny McGuire who is out until May with a knee injury.

“There’s no replacing Danny Mags,” he said.

“But me and Kev (Sinfield) are trying to do a bit more and compensate for his loss, find something extra, and I feel like I’ve had a real fresh start to the year.

“We did it tough on Friday night with so many injuries but the big guys worked their socks off,” he said.

“To go there and get a result like that was great.

“It wasn’t perfect but we’ve got to be happy with it in the circumstances.”

Leeds lost Brett Delaney (ankle), Brent Webb (leg) and Carl Ablett (knee) during the fixture and only Webb has a chance of being fit for this weekend’s game at Headingley.

Hull, meanwhile, have their own problems ahead of Sunday’s trip to Huddersfield with Sean Long having failed to come out for the second half due to an Achilles injury.
