Todmorden holds a fair-sized show today, squeezed into its central park, and the livestock competitions have the added edge of being a bit of a Lancashire-Yorkshire contest, thanks to the location.

Terrier racing and the touring Sheep Show are among the main ring attractions.

The North Yorkshire tomorrow is bigger and regarded by serious livestock exhibitors as a dress rehearsal for the Great Yorkshire. Showground is at Otterington Hall, DL7 9HW, on the A167, north of South Otterington and south of Northallerton. Attractions include an alpaca parade, performing dogs and a bareback riding team.

Eastrington, east of Howden on the M62, also has its show today, on the local playing fields – billed by its organisers as "the best village show in East Yorkshire" and featuring cattle and sheep competitions as well as the usual range of horsey events, a pet show and stunt riding in the main ring.

For the adventurous, the big event of the week is the Royal Highland in Edinburgh, Thursday, June 24 to Sunday, June 27.
