Kear bullish despite Trinity’s struggles

BOTTOM club Wakefield Trinity Wildcats look to avoid a fourth straight defeat at Hull FC on Friday confident they have the arsenal to start rising up the Engage Super League table.

John Kear’s side’, missing four regulars, suffered a 22-6 loss against Warrington at the weekend but showed enough spirit to suggest they are capable of turning the corner.

Scrum-half Tommy Lee admits the squad was lifted by the effort they produced against one of the competition’s favourites.

“Other than the Catalan win, that was our best performance yet,” he told the Yorkshire Post.

“That’s the type of team we want to be week-in, week-out, battling in such a way. We’ve still got a lot of improving to do, especially with the ball in our hands, but it was better.”

Lee produced two huge 40/20 kicks in the second period to demonstrate his own talent which he will be hoping to repeat against his former club Hull.

“It’s a first for me to do two in one match but that wind gave me a bit of help,” he said.

“It was really deceiving. We didn’t kick penalties in the first half as it was so strong against us and I don’t think Warrington did either. I can’t wait to get over to Hull on Friday. I played there last year and it was weird going back.

“It’s always strange, me being a Hull fan all my life, being from the city and playing against some of my mates, but it was great and this will be another good test against a really good team.”

The Airlie Birds just fell short 14-12 at champions Wigan yesterday and, like Wakefield, only have one win to their name.

However, Hull should have ex-Great Britain scrum-half Sean Long back in the ranks on Friday and Lee is readying himself to face the legend whose arrival last year partly led to his own departure.

“If he’s back it’ll make everyone up their game,” he said. “But if we put the same sort of effort in as we did (on Friday) and smarten up we’ve got every chance.”
