Kear finds positives as Giants pile on misery for Trinity

Coach John Kear pledged to stand by Wakefield's shell-shocked players after they conceded 50 points or more for the second time in a week.

Wakefield, thrashed 50-6 by St Helens last week, fielded an injury-hit side with 18-year-old youth product Matty Wildie at stand-off.

Key players including Sam Obst, Paul Cooke and Paul King were all out, leaving Kear to mix youngsters with senior pros battling through the pain barrier.

Kear vowed to support them and said: "If you'd have seen the dressing room at half-time, you'd know there were players playing who were clearly injured.

"We had take Matt Blaymire off after 50 minutes and we had a young guy who's been pulling up trees in the academy side in at stand-off trying to do his best in a very crucial role.

"I will stand by them because we thought we took a step up from last week. I saw from the effort in the second half that there were no lost causes."

He added he was glad to see the back of Huddersfield, who have scored 110 points against the Wildcats this term, and tipped them as a good outside bet for the play-offs.

"They're building for something," Kear said. "I was really impressed with them. There was freshness about Huddersfield's play. I said before that they're the ones to watch and I still believe they could be the dark horses in the play-offs."

The Giants ran in 10 tries, nine of them converted by former Wakefield star Danny Brough, and it was the second half-century of points they have registered against Wakefield this season.

The only blot was a suspected broken cheekbone or jaw to Larne Patrick, and Giants' assistant Paul Anderson said: "It's a real blow and I feel for him. He's been sent straight to hospital and we'll hopefully know more about the extent of the injury tomorrow.

"Our pivotal players like Kevin Brown and Scott Grix had a good input in the game. But it was the team performance we were looking for and I though everybody contributed well.

"Our aim is to win our four remaining games and finish as high up the table as we can. We've got a two-week break before our next game. Hopefully we can get some of our injured players back before then to put some pressure on those who are in the team at the moment.

"I also really feel for Wakefield. We know they're in a real hole with injuries right now. We have a lot of respect for them."
