The Cougars’ player-coach has enjoyed a fine career in Super League with Huddersfield Giants and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats before spells outside of the top flight with Hunslet and York.

He continues to prove a steadying influence for Keighley and was prominent again yesterday in a match in which Hull KR youngster Josh Guzdek marked his debut with a late try.

Andy Gabriel opened the scoring with a 14th-minute try that was converted by Danny Lawton but four minutes later Evan Simons crossed for Thunder.

Liam Darville claimed the Cougars’ second try five minutes before half-time and Lawton’s goal made the interval score 12-4.

Adam Brook, on loan from Bradford Bulls, went in 10 minutes into the second half and Lawton’s third goal gave Keighley a 14-point advantage.

Simons got his second try for Thunder that Matty Beharrell converted before Keighley wrapped up victory with tries from Neil Cherryholme and Guzdek and another Lawton goal.
