Keighley Cougars 28 Workington Town 20: Run of defeats finally comes to an end as Cougars deny Workington

KEIGHLEY moved off the bottom of the Championship table after holding on against Workington.

Cougars opened the scoring when Brendan Rawlins finished off a swift move out wide, set in motion by James Feather and Danny Jones. Scott Leatherbarrow added the extras and then slotted over two penalties later in the first-half to put them 10 points to the good.

The home side further extended their lead after Scott Law got Feather in prime position to scoot over, Leatherbarrow converting.

Town continued to give away penalties and coach Paul March was not taking any chances, opting to go for goal twice more in the last five minutes of the half, as Leatherbarrow booted over a further four points.

And they were not done there, as Jones put in a grubber kick with the hooter sounding that deflected its way to White, who went in back on the inside to send them into the break 24 points up.

Keighley then carried that momentum through, with Leatherbarrow assisting Oliver Pursglove in after consultation from the video referee.

But, all of a sudden, the Cumbrians sparked into life, scoring two quick-fire tries. Firstly, Peter Lupton charged in down the left.

Moments later, Karl Olstrum stepped his way over the line far too easily past the Cougar defenders and Brett Carter added the two to take them within three converted tries.

The comeback then looked on as Elliot Miller leapt onto a loose ball and rolled his way across the line, with the video referee confirming the try and Carter kicking the goal to put the visitors in bonus point territory. And they were not done there.

Workington made it 20 points in 20 minutes, as Carter raced in down the right, with his try confirmed by the video referee. But Keighley just held out to end a run of six-straight defeats.
