Kirke commits to Leeds Rhinos while Hudderfield Giants tie down Wardle

Leeds forward Ian Kirke has agreed a new two-year contract with the club, while Huddersfield have given teenage centre Joe Wardle a new contract that will keep him at the club until the end of 2014.

Thirty-year-old Kirke has made 126 appearances since joining the Rhinos from York in 2006 and appeared in all three of their Grand Final triumphs from 2007 to 2009.

Leeds coach Brian McDermott said: “I am really pleased that Ian has agreed a new contract with the club. He is very consistent in what he delivers for the team on a weekly basis.

“He has still got many good years ahead of him and I have enjoyed watching his transformation into a prop during this season and I am sure there is more to come from Ian.”

Nineteen-year-old Wardle joined the Giants on a two-year deal from Bradford in the winter and has now signed a two-year extension after making 10 first-team appearances so far this season.

“I’m over the moon to be signing a new deal with the club and I’m very grateful to Huddersfield for giving me the opportunity,” he said.

Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown said: “Joe forced his way into the first team through his good form.

“Since he came to the club in the off season he has worked hard and he looks a bright player not only for now but also for the future.”
