The 32-year-old, who joined the Rhinos in 2006 from York City Knights, has been a mainstay of the Rhinos squad ever since and has gone on to make 177 appearances for the club before tonight’s game against St Helens and won five Grand Final winners rings.

Kirke said: “I had no intentions to leave the club because I am very happy with life at the Rhinos so to get a new contract is brilliant. I was obviously aware my contract was up at the end of the season but I wasn’t panicking about it. The closer the time gets, it comes more into focus, but the club have always been fair with me and at no time was I worried to the point that it impacted on my training or playing, it is just part of being a professional sportsman.”

Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott said: “Ian is an integral part of our squad. Every successful team needs players who have the attributes that Ian brings to our team. He is a complete professional who takes great care of himself and always gives his all for the team. I am delighted he has agreed a new contract and look forward to continuing to work with him.”
