Lawrence has double target as Giants aim to hit form

Huddersfield centre Michael Lawrence is hoping to end the Giants’ losing streak and celebrate his 100th Super League start in style tonight.

Lawrence, snubbed last week for England Knights selection, reaches the milestone as Huddersfield host Hull Kingston Rovers at the Galpharm Stadium.

In recent weeks, the Giants have lost to Widnes (26-22), Salford (38-34), Wigan (32-12) and Catalan Dragons (27-20) to slide from the Super League summit. Their last league win was against Bradford Bulls on April 22.

Lawrence is adamant Nathan Brown’s side can arrest their mini-slump, starting tonight.

“For the first 10 to 12 games of the year, everyone was playing really well so we are just looking to get back to what we were doing there,” he said.

“The spirit around the camp has been really good. Everyone is really confident, still having a laugh at training and working hard. We just need to take that onto the field for the full 80 minutes.”

“All it takes is one game and we can go from there. We are focused and determined to do well for the club. We can turn it round.

“We can’t wait for Monday. Hull KR are a good side. They are dangerous.”

Lawrence – who celebrated his 100th Giants appearance over Easter – has shrugged off missing out on international recognition.

“I got in the Knights as a centre last year but this year the squad was selected early and I had been playing in the back row, so, unfortunately, I missed out,” he said.

“But I want to concentrate on playing well for Huddersfield and if a Knights call-up follows then that’s a bonus. Hopefully, if I continue my good form, I can put my name in the hat.”

The Giants are boosted tonight by the return of Tommy Lee, captain Kevin Brown and David Faiumu but centre Joe Wardle has been ruled out for two months through injury.

“Kev will be back from suspension, Fuey will be okay to play and Tommy is back from his injury,” said Giants coach Brown. “Tommy was in terrific form before he was injured so now he’s back he’ll play a key role, those faces should give everyone a lift.”

Rovers coach Craig Sandercock could welcome back Jake Webster after a double hernia ruled him out for three months, while Joel Clinton is expecting to play despite suffering a head injury against Warrington.

“I’d suggest confidence is the highest this season,” said Sandercock after three successive wins.
