League 1 round-up: Wins for York City Knights and Doncaster, Keighley Cougars hold Toronto Wolfpack

After an even opening stint, Andy Ellis broke the deadlock after a classic dummy half try from close range. Connor Robinson added the extras for a 6-0 lead after ten minutes. Workington levelled the scores five minutes later after a dropped Knights ball in midfield was hacked forward, with winger Phil Lister gathering to score down the left edge. Carl Forber expertly converted from the touch line.

The Knights regained the lead after 25 minutes as debutant Jordan Cox - who troubled the visitors all afternoon in an impressive 80 minute display - expertly drew defenders in before offloading to Connor Robinson, who sent Ellis strolling in for his second try of the afternoon. Robinson goaled for a 12-6 score.

York head coach James Ford made a triple substitution on the half hour mark, and it had an immediate effect as Ross Osborne - the on loan Hull FC academy prop on his second debut for the Knights - won a penalty from a rampaging run up field. Jordan Cox powered over on the subsequent play. Robinson missed the conversion, but later added a penalty goal on the stroke of half time.

Workington started the second half brightly and got themselves back in the game just three minutes after the break. Consecutive penalties put the Cumbrians in a strong attacking position and Macauley Davies crossed down the right edge. Forber again converting.

With Workington pressing for an equalising try, a forced pass found its way to York’s Joe Porter who broke up field. The ball was shipped to the right wing for New Morrison to score on the next play. Robinson missed the difficult conversion.

Some outstanding defence from York held firm on their own try line for five consecutive sets as Town desperately searched for an opening to no avail.

The crucial match winning try came ten minutes from time, as Workington forced the play coming out of their own half, Connor Robinson was gifted an interception try from 40 meters out. He converted his own try for a now unassailable 28-12 lead.

A spirited Workington continued to fight however, and scored a consolation try moments from time through Joe Hambley.

York now turn their attentions to a difficult trip to Whitehaven in search of two league points that would go a long way to securing a top four finish in the League 1 Super 8s.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Keighley Cougars staged a second-half fightback to hold big-spending Toronto Wolfpack 26-26.

Trailing 22-12 at half-time, Keighley roared back to share the spoils, Vinny Finigan (2), Hamish Barnes and Ritchie Hawkyard grabbing tries, Matty Beharrell kicking five goals.

Wolfpack’s tries came from Jonny Pownall, Quentin Laulu-Togagae, Liam Kay, Richard Whiting and Greg Worthington. Craig Hall booted three goals.

Elsewhere, tries from Kyle Kesik, Iafeta Paleaaesina, Sam Doherty, Kieran Cross and Charlie Martin earned Doncaster a 30-22 win over Whitehaven.

In the League 1 Shield, Hunslet slipped to a 20-12 defeat at North Wales Crusaders, Joe Sanderson grabbing a try and two goals, with Liam Mackay also crossing for a try.
