Leeds Rhinos 10 Castleford Tigers 8: Sinfield boots Rhinos to Wembley in extra-time drama

Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield maintained his composure by kicking a penalty in the third minute of extra time to send his side back to Wembley and break Castleford hearts.

The Tigers were on course for their first Challenge Cup final for 19 years when they led 8-2 after 72 minutes of a pulsating second semi-final at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium.

But in a dramatic finish, 20-year-old centre Kallum Watkins grabbed the Rhinos’ first try, Sinfield tied the scores with the conversion and both sides missed drop-goal attempts to break the deadlock before the game entered extra time.

The decisive moment came when Leeds substitute Danny McGuire was felled by a high tackle by Castleford full-back Ryan McGoldrick in the first period of extra time and Sinfield stepped up to hand out the most cruel punishment, his successful goal signalling the end of the game.

Sinfield’s “golden point” means Leeds will meet Wigan at Wembley on August 27, when they will attempt to redeem themselves for last year’s 30-6 mauling by Warrington.
