Leeds Rhinos 72 Barrow Raiders 10: McDermott praise as Rhinos run in 13 tries

Leeds had been outscored in the second half of their 64-28 win over League One team Doncaster in round five, but did a much more professional job this time.

They were 22-0 up after 15 minutes, 32-4 clear at the break and then kept their foot on the accelerator in the final 40, running in 13 tries in total.

Joel Moon led the way with a hat-trick and opened the scoring after just three minutes. Matt Parcell and Ash Handley also crossed and Moon went over again before Barrow gave their travelling supporters something to cheer about when Luke Cresswell touched down for an unconverted try from a long pass by Ryan Fieldhouse.

Leeds’s former Australia Test prop Keith Galloway was sin-binned after Barrow scrum-half Karl Ashall was laid out in back play.

The visitors could not make the extra man count and Moon completed his hat-trick on 34 minutes and then Ryan Hall raced the length of the field for a spectacular touchdown.

Tries by Handley and Stevie Ward kept the scoreboard ticking and Liam Sutcliffe – who also kicked 10 conversions – and Rob Burrow went over to make it 54-4.

Jarrad Stack scored a consolation try for Barrow 13 minutes from time, improved by Ashall, but Burrow, Parcell and Galloway crossed in the closing stages.

Rhinos coach Brian McDermott said: “I’m very pleased.

“We didn’t do a good enough job against Doncaster in a similar situation a few weeks ago and Doncaster ended up having a far better second half than we did.

“This time we followed through and finished it off and to score 72 points is good.”

Rhinos have been drawn at home to their Championship partner club Featherstone Rovers in the quarter-finals.

McDermott said: “Since I’ve been coach we’ve been to Wembley four times and I think we’ve played one Championship team, in Leigh. I don’t feel bad about drawing another Championship team. Featherstone are a good team and we’ll pay them a fair amount of respect.”
