Leigh Centurions 16 Halifax 36: Worrincy doubles helps Halifax stun the leaders

A NEAR-perfect first half paved the way for a handsome victory for Halifax.

Inspired by the recent appointment of Brian Noble in a consultancy role, Halifaax were strong in defence and devastating in attack as they registered six tries, three in a 13-minute spell.

Rob Worrincy opened the scores after six minutes and when Ben Black’s kick created havoc, Bob Beswick supported down the middle for Danny Jones to goal. Leigh pulled a try back through Martyn Ridyard, goaled by Mick Nanyn, before tries from Steve Bannister, Worrincy and Miles Greenwood took the visitors clear. Just before the interval Jones ran between the posts and Halifax were 32-6 clear.

Leigh started the second half better but Halifax withstood the onslaught and replied with Sam Barlow forcing the ball down for their seventh try.

A spirited response in the final few minutes saw Leigh score tries from Steve Maden and a second from Ridyard but Halifax were well worth their victory and their play-off push starts now.
