Leigh Centurions 30 Hunslet Hawks 10: Battling Hunslet fail to build on early lead

Hunslet Hawks gave an improved performance against Leigh Centurions but sadly for their faithful followers, the result was still the same – and produced a seventh league loss.

Despite conceding five tries, and losing Tom Henderson and David Clayton for long spells of the game, the Hawks gave a good account of themselves, particularly in the first half, and scored the first try after just 13 minutes.

Tommy Haughey offloaded and former Huddersfield full-back Elliott Hodgson chimed in on the right for his first Hunslet try. Luke Helliwell converted to give the visitors a deserved 6-0 advantage.

Leigh responded after 20 minutes between the posts and the Centurions hit the front with two tries in eight minutes before the break from James Laithwaite and Tommy Gallagher. Tries in the first 15 minutes of the second half by Castleford loanee Ryan Brierley and Rob Parker, and five Martyn Ridyard goals, stretched the advantage out to 30-6 but Hunslet battled and claimed the final score of the game through Lee Brickwood nine minutes from the end as the ball moved swiftly from right to left to bring up double figures.
