Leigh Centurions 66 York City Knights 10: Featherstone knocked off top by Leigh as York suffer on travels

York City Knights again copped a big defeat on their travels, conceding 12 tries against Ian Millward’s Leigh Centurions who leapfrogged over Featherstone Rovers into top spot in the Co-operative Championship.

It was a tough day at the office for Dave Woods’s men who replied with two tries of their own.

Leigh drew first blood when Martyn Ridyard danced over but York replied when Anthony Thackeray burned off the cover in a 30-yard dash.

Sadly 6-4 was as close as it got for York City Knights as Leigh scored four tries in 14 minutes to open a 30-4 advantage.

Jamie Ellis (2), Chris Hill and Mick Nanyn all went over the line with Nanyn’s eventual 26-point tally taking him above Leeds great Lewis Jones in the all-time points chart.

Sam Hopkins scored on the stroke of half-time and worse was to come for York when Andy Thornley and Nanyn went over in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

York upped their defensive effort and frustrated Leigh until the 59th minute when Ellis slipped through for his hat-trick.

Leigh registered a further two tries with Adam Higson roaring 70 metres before Tommy Goulden crossed and Nanyn added his ninth goal.

York finally responded when hard-working Nathan Freer snaked an arm out in a three-man tackle for Tom Bush to convert, but Leigh scored once more when Dean McGilvray just made the corner.
