Leigh Centurions v Castleford Tigers: Daryl Powell refusing to take strugglers lightly

AT first glance, it would seem Super League leaders Castleford Tigers could not have planned this Bank Holiday weekend any better.

The fixture list decreed they hosted bottom-placed Widnes Vikings on Friday and today they head to second-bottom Leigh Centurions.

However, Daryl Powell’s side had to come from 12 points behind in the second half against Widnes before eventually prospering 32-22.

Furthermore, Leigh ended their nine-match losing run by stunning Challenge Cup holders Hull FC 26-22 on Friday, their first ever away win in Super League.

“That was a great performance from them,” admitted coach Powell.

“They will have taken a lot of confidence from that, but we need to focus on ourselves.

“We have to be mindful of the opposition, but make sure we get our own game right.

“If our game is right we are confident. We probably went away from some of the things we normally do on Friday and we got challenged.

“So we have to make sure that doesn’t happen and we don’t go too conservative when we get put under pressure.”

Powell revealed his side made an unusually high 15 errors against Widnes, something he hopes to see remedied in this afternoon’s televised tie.

He added: “Widnes were very good, did some smart things and we were a little bit off but we showed a lot of character to get out of it in the last 10 minutes.

“We were 22-10 down at one point and we found our way out of it. We’ve not played well and we scored 32 points.

“We lost a couple of games early on in the season when we were put under a bit of pressure.

“But against Huddersfield we came through without some of our high-quality players and we got challenged by Leeds and Widnes. Widnes were down quite a lot of players, but played really well, without fear and really challenged us.

“It was a big win for us against a team who were desperate.”

Castleford plan to welcome back Jake Webster and Junior Moors at Leigh after they were rested on Friday.

Former Hull KR second-row Kevin Larroyer could debut and Alex Foster is also in contention but props Gadwin Springer and Andy Lynch drop out.

Powell explained: “Lynchy is all right, but Gadwin tore a hamstring scoring a try.

“He could be out for a few weeks with that, but we’re not sure yet exactly how bad it is.”
