Matterson happy to earn first home win

Castleford coach Terry Matterson was pleased to see his side claim their first home win of the season, a 22-16 victory over Crusaders, but admitted there was still plenty of room for improvement.

Kirk Dixon, Ryan McGoldrick, Joe Westerman, who kicked three goals, and young Jordan Thompson ran in the four Cas tries as they claimed only their third win of the season and their first at The Jungle since beating the same opposition last September.

Matterson said: "It was a very important win but there were not a whole lot of positives to come from the game.

"It was poor quality. It was a win though, and a win's a win, we're here to win and we did.

"I don't know how we did. We tried to lose because we're not used to winning this year and we didn't know what it's like. We have to get a hell of a lot better."

Castleford, who had led in all three of their home defeats so far this season, allowed the Wrexham-based club back into the game in the second half as scores from Jason Chan and Weller Hauraki made for a nervy finish.

Matterson insisted that despite breaking their home hoodoo, radical improvements need to be made.

He added: "We can score some good tries but in the second half we stopped playing and came up with some really poor mistakes. We looked really good at times but then also looked really silly at others.

"We're not the smartest rugby league team at the moment and that's why we are where we are.

"Injuries aren't helping us at the moment but that team is a better team than what we served up out there today."

Rangi Chase, who finished the game with three assists, and try-scorer McGoldrick drew praise from the Tigers boss.

He added: "Rangi Chase and Ryan McGoldrick were really good and I think Jordan Thompson is really coming of age too."
