matterson sees moore as ideal for queensland

FORMER Huddersfield Giants hooker Scott Moore is the latest Englishman to move to the NRL after finalising a two-year deal with North Queensland Cowboys, writes Dave Craven.

He was released by the Giants at the end of this season having earlier been sacked by Widnes Vikings.

Moore, 24, has always been a talented player, not least shown when he won three England caps in 2009 after a successful first stint with Huddersfield.

But controversy has often followed the former St Helens player and many thought he may have blown his chance of realising his potential.

However, he has earned a golden opportunity after Cowboys assistant Terry Matterson, who was his head coach during a loan spell at Castleford Tigers in 2008, recommended his signing.

“Our coaching staff has identified Scott as a player who is very capable of doing well in the NRL,” said Cowboys football manager Peter Parr.

“He sees joining the Cowboys as the chance to take his game to even higher levels and we’ll do everything we can to ensure that happens.

“We’re sure he’s going to fit in well here and challenge for a place in our 17 for round one.”

Hull KR forward Jason Netherton is to leave Craven Park after eight years.

Netherton, 30, joined the Robins in 2004 and had a year left on his contract.

However, the sole survivor from their promotion-winning team of 2006 has agreed a severance deal after starting only two matches this season.

“I’ve had an amazing eight years here and am sad to be leaving,” he said.

“I’ve got some brilliant memories from some really special games which I’ll never forget.

“Myself and my wife have got a few things in the pipeline so we’ll see what happens in the near future.”

Hull KR chairman Neil Hudgell said: “Jason has been part of the fabric of the club and will continue to be, even though he is moving on.”
