McDermott fined for French penalty comments

LEEDS coach Brian McDermott has been fined £500 by the Rugby Football League for his critical comments in the aftermath of the champions’ win over Catalan Dragons in Perpignan on Easter Monday.

Although the Rhinos won 27-12 despite having Ryan Bailey sent off early in the second half, McDermott claimed in a post-match interview that visiting teams to Perpignan are inevitably on the wrong end of the penalty count.

McDermott was found to be in breach of the RFL’s Respect policy and its operational rules by publicly criticising the manner in which matches are officiated.

McDermott must pay £250 immediately with a further £250 suspended until the end of the 2014 season.

St Helens assistant coach Jamal Lolesi has also been fined £500, half of it suspended, after admitting using foul and abusive language towards a match official during Saints’ win over Salford last month.
