Miller apology to fans after Doncaster crash to Workington defeat

Doncaster coach Tony Miller said sorry to the supporters after the home side had been comprehensively outplayed in a vital top-four clash.

Miller’s men started sloppily giving away needless penalties, as well as an early try, and Workington took full advantage.

The Dons coach said: “The wheels came off today and I can only apologise to the fans because it looked as if they wanted it more than us.

“We made it easy for them in the first half and it just wasn’t good enough.”

Doncaster were coming off an outstanding victory over Whitehaven, but they were never able to reproduce the previous week’s form in a slipshod display.

Slack defending led to Jack Pedley touching down in the second minute and further errors resulted in an 18th-minute try from Brett Carter with Darren Holt kicking a couple of goals inbetween for Workington.

A try from Elliot Miller made it 18-0 to the visitors at half-time after Doncaster had been caught napping by a clever kick from Holt.

The Dons did try to rally and had spells on top but Town were magnificent in defence and refused to buckle.

An early second-half breakaway try from Scott Kaighan, following Doncaster pressure, put Workington further in front and ensured there would be no home fightback.

Prop Kris Coward scored a controversial try to add insult to injury before a great run by the impressive Jarrard Stack led to Pedley adding a sixth try in the 73rd minute.

Substitute Dom Dee’s injury time try was no consolation for Doncaster who only had themselves to blame for their heaviest losing margin of the Championship One season in their final home match.
