The NFU's governing council has stepped up its opposition to flying 'Chinese lanterns' – a party fashion of recent years – by calling for an outright ban.

The NFU says manufacturers have failed to respond to evidence that wire from the lanterns gets eaten by animals, wrapped around their feet, or chopped into silage and other crops.
They say the toys are also a serious fire risk and Germany and Australia have already banned them.
