No margin for error for Hull after trouncing

DEFLATED Hull FC offered no excuses for their embarrassing loss against Wigan Warriors and accept they will now have to win every Super 8s game to stand any chance of reaching the play-offs semi-finals.

The mistake-ridden Black and Whites were wretched in a 48-12 home defeat that brutally ended their three-match losing run.

They are likely to be six points adrift of the top four when their seven Super 8s fixtures begin.

Back-row Jordan Thompson admitted: “It is possible mathematically (to qualify) but I reckon we’ve got to win every game now.

“Cas’ and Huddersfield are chasing that fourth spot, too, and they’ll be six points ahead of us (by the end of the weekend).

“So, we have to bat massive, be on the ball every match and not have any off week like we’ve just shown out there against Wigan.

“I can’t put my finger on why we performed like that. It’s just one of those things.

“There’s been a couple of games like that this year.

“It’s little bits of skill, not massive things we need to fix up on, just simple thing like throwing the ball to the floor and offloading to grass.

“Teams are coming 100mph at us. Wigan are a side where you can’t afford to turn up like that as they’ll score every time you give them it. That’s what they did and put almost 50 points on us.”

Hull won their crucial derby at Hull KR the previous week to secure a top-eight spot and it could be argued they were physically and mentally drained after that fixture.

But Thompson, 23, insisted: “If you’re looking for excuses you could say that but that’s not what we’re looking for at the minute.

“We’re going to have to kick on now and put this behind us.

“We just came off second best. The simple fact is we needed to show up and do what we said we were going to do, and we didn’t.

“It’s massively disappointing. As a player, it’s definitely a game you’d rather avoid playing in.”

Wigan started hard and fast but the former Castleford player maintained: “Wigan have always been that kind of team and we’d said all week we need to deal with that and throw something back at them. Unfortunately, they turned up and we didn’t, hence the result.”

Hull, like the rest of the competition, will have their Super 8s fixtures confirmed on Wednesday.

In all likelihood, they will face Leeds, Huddersfield and Catalans at home with daunting away fixtures at St Helens, Wigan, Castleford and Warrington.
