Ostrom gets his reward

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats coach John Kear says he will continue searching far afield for Super League talent after handing a full-time contract to teenage Cumbrian centre Karl Ostrom.

The 18-year-old from amateur club Wath Brow Hornets has impressed during a two-month trial and had also attracted interest from Wigan Warriors and Bradford Bulls.

Ostrom, who had been working in the building trade, turned down a move to hometown Championship club Whitehaven to pursue a Super League contract and Kear said: "We were impressed with what we saw during his trial games.

"I'd like to congratulate him on winning a full-time professional contract.

"Wakefield will compete for the top young talent in rugby league no matter where they are to be found.

"It's important that we maintain that vigilance if we want to succeed in our ambition to become one of the leading clubs in the Super League."
